In class today, we learned about consonant blends and how they are two or three consonants that come together in a word and both sounds are heard. Students needed to identify these in their spelling words. Examples: gr, nd, fl, dr, ck, wr. The following are non-examples: th, ph, sh, wh. These would be examples digraphs that involve creating one new sound.
In reading, we read about Thomas Jefferson and the writing of the Declaration of Independence in our new unit “Creating a New Nation.”
For writing, student were editing their three paragraphs about the best part of summer, the worst part of summer, and what they want to do next summer.
During read-a-loud, we read more in The Birchbark House while students wrote in their hand-writing journals.
Math today was spent diagnosing students’ understanding of place value from billions to thousandths, different ways to write numbers, and understanding story problems. some time was spent on discussing different properties in math: commutative and associative. Tomorrow, we will continue to address these areas and expand to identity. Keep working on those math facts. I really need to see you master your times tables. Some of you have done really well with this!! Keep up the good work.
